Catamarans and Monohulls; Power or Sail--World wide...

You can enjoy a sailing vacation whether you have experience or not. A sailing vacation on a Yacht offers the advantage of visiting the smaller Islands that you don't see on a passenger liner or while staying at even the most luxurious land resort.

With your own boat and your own crew, you choose where you want to go and the pace of your vacation. You can explore and be adventurous, or sit back and relax. Choose a romantic getaway for two, bring your family and friends or even set up a corporate rewards program.

The cost varies with the size boat and degree of luxury that you require, however you can generally enjoy the utmost in luxury for about the same or less cost as a vacation at a luxury resort--but visit more places, and have more fun.

Q&A...

What’s the difference between a crewed charter and a bareboat charter with crew?
A crewed charter is an all-inclusive vacation–it’s like being at an upscale resort with a different water view each morning. The boat has it's own permanent crew which gives the vessel a unique personality. Included in virtually all cases is a gourmet chef, and knowledgeable captain.

A bareboat with crew is “a la carte”–a crew is assigned to the boat (Either just a captain, or captain and cook. and the guests choose whatever add-ons they wish, e.g., provisioning, beverages, windsurfers, etc. It’s more hands-on than a luxury crewed vacation. With SailScape, we also offer luxury bare boats. These generally approach the crewed boats in terms of luxury equipment such as A/C, TV/VCR's, Microwave, etc.--but the crews are still optional.

Is a crewed vacation more costly?
Cost depends upon the yacht, the location, and the time of year. Since a crewed vacation is all-inclusive, except for transportation, you know all your costs from the outset. Motor yachts are often more expensive than sailing yachts, as the client is usually responsible for the cost of fuel used during the charter.

How involved am I in the itinerary and activity planning?
Guests take an active role in the planning. Prior to your arrival, the crew will discuss where you want to go within your cruising area, plus any particular land-based excursions you might wish to take. Changes to the planned itinerary may occur when the Captain decides that the weather is not suitable for the journey, or if you’re having so much fun at one place, you decide not to leave!

May we request to disembark at a location other than the one we started from? Is there an additional charge for this?

Pickup and drop off locations depend upon the yacht’s schedule, but can often be different to allow for longer passages. Although a one-way fee may be waived in some cases if the new port fits the yacht’s schedule, it is customary to charge one-half the daily rate for the yacht to pick up or drop off guests at a location that keeps the yacht away from its home port longer than necessary.

Are guests expected to participate in the running of the yacht while under sail?
No. Because you’re aboard a fully crewed yacht, you just sit back and relax! (However, at your option, you may participate if you like. Tell us your preferences on our Request for Information form!)

If a guest would like to take the helm, is that possible?
In most cases, yes, the Captain will allow you to take the helm if weather and safety permit.

Will our yacht sail at night?
This is up to the Captain, but most crewed yachts sail at night when making long passages.

How does the Chef know what we like or don’t like to eat?
A preference sheet will be sent to you, so you can list the likes/dislikes of each guest. At that time, you should also tell the Chef about any celebrations that you wish to have on board, such as birthdays or anniversaries. It’s also important that you make the Chef aware of special dietary requirements–low-fat menus, food allergies, etc. For special medical problems, like diabetes, for example, the Chef will talk with the guest and customize the menu accordingly.

What kind of water sports equipment is available on a crewed yacht?
Water toys run the gamut from basic snorkel gear to full dive sets, water skis, Kayaks, Wind Surfers, knee boards, jet skis (where allowed), water polo sets, and more. Check the spec sheet on the yachts that interest you. (Much of this information is on our Boat summary pages, and then detailed in the link pages we provide.)

Do the yachts offer all-inclusive dive packages or rendezvous diving?
This depends on the yacht. On some, you can not only dive if certified, but also finish your certification, if you did the classroom work at home. Other yachts do not have dive instructors on board, but are happy to arrange for a dive boat to take you to the best dive sites. Remember to bring your dive card with you! (Much of this information is on our Boat summary pages, and then detailed in the link pages we provide.)

How far in advance should I book my charter in order to be sure to have the yacht I want?
Many yachts book a year in advance. Remember, a crewed yacht is one-of-a-kind, so if you want a particular yacht and crew, the earlier you book, the better.
