Customizing
Anyone can deliver
a factory boat
The difference is in having an experienced
team work with you to get your boat the way you want it. To see our
general customizing page, go
here. To get more information on specific products--continue.
Where to start...
Setting your boat up for living aboard and long distance cruising...
The following table is set up to help you better understand the various categories
of
equipment that might be necessary for serious cruising.
If you haven't done so yet, it's recommended that you fill out our interview form which
helps you and us start to create a picture of your needs. You may want to use this table
before and/or after you fill out the form, depending on how much you want to be involved
in the selection process. You may go to the form now (bookmark it if
you don't fill it out now.)
Generally, after we receive the form back, we will recommend some choices (and perhaps,
secondary choices) for your consideration. We are also capable of installing some of the
equipment immediately, and preparing the boat for later installation of other equipment.
You may click on the small images to see larger images, and follow the links in the
notes to get more detailed information. Our final quote will reflect fully installed
prices with both the equipment and installation fully warranted. Remember, we guarantee
the best, total package price anywhere! Meet our people, and see our
guarantee policy here.
Please keep in mind that our success precludes us from having the time to offer
detailed pricing until you're ready to make a deposit. We can, however, offer you some
gross, ballpark prices in the meantime. If you're not sure of your time frame, talk to us.
If it's anything within a year, or you're planning to use our YPSMP to pay your boat off early--then talk
to us now!

Recommended equipment...
The following equipment is the equipment we recommend for various reasons including:
- Good Parts availability--internationally
- Good service record.
- Relatively easy installation
- Stable companies to work with
- Our familiarity and success with the equipment in service.
The overall goal is to size the batteries and supply side so that approximately 1-2
hours running a day will recharge everything. End up giving you 24 hours of refrigeration,
hot water, fully charged batteries, and water--everything but A/C if you need it.

Invertors and/or Battery charger. Invertors normally 2,500Watts or greater. |
If you don't install a generator, the invertors can give you access to a
microwave,
and small appliances as well as computers, chargers etc. If you do have a generator--you
don't have to start it up every time you want to use the blender! These days, the cost of
combining the invertors and charger is little more than either by itself. When do you need
a generator? When you need A/C away from the dock. In spite of claims to the contrary--an
invertors will not successfully handle those loads! Invertors/Chargers Heart Interface is the other
great company for electrical needs. |

ee104.jpg |
Water maker--12V/Eng. Driven/or 110V. |
If there is any place you need customizing, it's here. It all depends on how you're
going to use the boat. Probably the most cost effective system once you elect to have a
generator is a 110V. system. Sizing, and whether to go with a modular or self-contained
system all depend on your budget, the space available and capacity needed. Talk it over
with our system engineers. Village Marine

A/C. With or without air handlers? |
In most cases, we can do a simple system with ducts from one or two A/C units. When
your budget permits, we can add air handlers so that you can have individual cabin
controls, less wasted space with ducting and individual units, and generally a quieter
system. Our systems engineer will discuss your needs in detail. For more information: Marine Air's site. Cruiser's

Satellite TV |
Head offshore and catch the big game on TV too! With the world's smallest
fully-stabilized satellite television system boaters can venture out and keep track of
their hometown favorites at the same time!
Designed for marine use, the TV II antenna takes input of pitch, roll and yaw variations
so you get a continuous picture in any sea conditions. Even underway the patented
gyro-stabilization system maintains its one degree envelope of pointing accuracy so you
won't lose your picture even after you've left the dock. With TracVision II you get over
200 channels of your favorite sports, entertainment, news and - of course - weather
programming from DIRECTV/USSB. Satellite

ee106b.jpg |
The right engine? |
That's right! Not only must you consider the right engine/prop combination for the
boat when lightly and fully loaded, but also what additional, power robbing equipment will
be on it. Engine driven, oversized alternators, refrigeration's systems and even generators
may make your once adequate engine, marginal. We have a computer system that
analyzes your
needs. Again, we look at the total picture and package everything to be compatible. Yanmar diesels have dominated the engine
market for sailboats under about 55' or so. They have an excellent track record and
international parts availability as well as enough models to fit virtually every
application. The only thing to remember is that the prop is the other side of a successful
team. |

ee102b.gif |
Auto Prop--Feathering, variable pitch prop |
The perfect engine won't do you any good without an appropriate prop. Imagine your car
with just second gear? There would be a very narrow range of where it would be efficient!
Feathering props offer two advantages. They feather when sailing reducing drag (increasing
speed and shortening passage times!) and they reverse giving much more thrust and thus
control, in reverse. Admirable. Now comes the Auto Prop which does these things, plus has
some cusp in the blades and adjusts it's pitch automatically to the load. Wow! The good
news is that it costs about the same. Go on the WEB and check the claims, but I think in
the end, we've found the best choice. Here it is--the
Auto-Prop site. Warning, it's slow with movie segments but it shows the product off
really well--worth the wait. (As a bonus, the people at Auto Prop are really nice--and
helpful!) |

Boat customization
W e have woodworkers and fabricators, SS fabricators, plastic fabricators and
complete haul out and yard facilities available in Annapolis, America's Sailing
Capital.
Here are some samples of some of the work that we've done in the past.
Interior changes...
Discussion...
- i100. A dinette with a custom table and chairs. Features built in bar, custom inlays,
etc. Also custom cabinetry surrounding, including bar, entertainment center and more. Some
of this was designed for factory installation, some for afterwards.
- i102. Custom molded compartment to accommodate a microwave. (Plastic fabricators
available here.)
- i103. An under berth cabinet, turned into a large, pull out drawer with minimum loss of
storage and improved access.
- i104-105. Pantry lockers located in a blind corner (formerly wasted space.) Woodwork
matches, nothing projects out.
- i106-One of many offices installed--this on a Jeanneau 52. Equally suitable for
catamarans or monohulls. On monohulls, this can be part of a third cabin conversion which
includes adding pantry and freezer space or a fold away work shop. Tell us your ideas!
- i108-i108b. Simply breaking the standard table into two symmetrical half's, allows one
half to fold on the other for a finished breakfast or coffee table. This gives walk around
space when the large table is no longer needed for dinner.
-
Metal fabrication...
Discussion...
- ss-200. SS Life raft bracket
- ss-0201. SS dive tank bracket incorporated in stern pulpit. (2 tanks on each side.)
- ss100-ss104. Fixed, welded pipe frame Bimini. This one includes options for:
- Solid walk way down the center to access the main and custom cover.
- Speakers in upper, outer corners
- Overhead lights
- Overhead hand rails
- Zip open panels for sail visibility.
- Stern lights for dinghy boarding at night (can be set up on motion detectors.)
- Full enclosure, includes a hard screen windshield resistant to scratching.
- Ask about custom options. (Rod holders, mood lighting, built in davits, travelers, etc.)
- Note that custom names also available.
Choosing materials..
Discussion...
Fabrics...
Ultra Leather. Newest, low maintenance fabric is ultra-leather. All
the luxury of leather, but easy cleaning with soap and water. Stays supple an d
maintains it's luxury feel longer with less care. Cost is comparable to most
quality fabrics, less than half of leather. Your guests won't know the
difference.
www.ultrafabricsllc.com
Ultra Suede. We've chosen to show you a series of ultra-suede, upgrade fabrics. Ultra-suede is a
nylon derivative. Tough and stain resistant, but very supple and luxurious. It's often
used in luxury vehicles and stands up exceptionally well in a marine
environment--generally outlasts conventional fabrics two to one, while costing about 50%
more. There is a huge range of colors and, as a bonus, you can go to virtually any high
end fabric store and pick out your favorite color--here's an idea of what's available, as
well as some leather samples which also works well (remember how they were always used in
convertibles? It's because they hold up so well!)
We can also ship your fabric and have virtually anything used, or ship the boat without
fabric (just use tack cloth) and have our local upholsterers do the work.
- i-c100. Ultra Suede--desert colors.
- i-c101. Ultra Suede--earth colors, not shown, sea and cool colors
- i-101-b. Other fabrics available from Jeanneau. These are always changing.
- i-c102. Leathers--some ideas to consider.

Misc. Comfort and decorating...
Comfortable mattresses? It doesn't cost that much to be really comfortable. We have two
ways to improve your live-aboard comfort. One is to incorporate flexible batons as an
innerspring mattress under your normal foam boat cushion. This is available on virtually
any of our models--standard on the 42 and larger Fountaine Pajots. For even more comfort,
explore having a real boat mattress made.
(Handcraft Mattress Co.) Or go to: the Boat blind site for custom mattresses and blinds.
Kohler bath and kitchen fixtures.
Custom Tables...
There are many suppliers of custom tables and/or pedestals. These include units
with custom designs and hydraulic or electric lifts. Go
to this site for a few examples. We have access to many more suppliers after
we find out what your specific needs are.
TV/Entertainment...
There are literally more choices than we can
easily go into here. The basic consideration is whether to go with a simple 12V
system, or upgrade to the unlimited possibilities that a 110V. system
offers.
It's important to discuss your immediate and
long term plans so that we can pre-wire for equipment or speakers to be
installed later. Also, our system engineer will want to properly size the
electrical system if, for instance, you will be running a 110V. system off of
your on-board inverter a majority of the time.
TV's specifically. With the unusual spaces
often found on many boats, it can be difficult to get a TV positioned optimally
and at the same time, not take up valuable cabinet space. 2 unique solutions
include:
Flat screen monitors which come in a variety
of sizes and configurations and take up very little space, and/or can fold up
into the ceiling or other concealed spaces.
Multimedia projectors which can be used for
computer and internet projection, as well as offering TV, large screen
projection. These offer incredible flexibility as they take up very little room
themselves and can be concealed in small, inconspicuous spaces. The screen can
be a white wall, or pull down, concealed dedicated screen. The receiver/VCR can
be installed remotely in any available space. All and all a solution worth
considering.
Woods and other finishes...
- Many custom wood treatments can be incorporated. Ask.
- Counter tops: Marble, Granite, Corian and other materials available.
- Also: Custom light fixtures, wiring, interior furnishings, etc.
Wood and other sample finishes I can reference this page and show you the finish on
various woods available for interiors, etc.
Granite and marble. Here is a great site to
get ideas and see samples.
Sail systems...

rigging details coming. Please discuss your requirements.
Spinnakers...
A great site with A symmetrical spinnaker panel layouts and colors.
(Color your own spinnaker! http://uksailmakers.com/colorspins.html
Harken's site One of the best resources on
the WEB for links to Sailing sites and sailing hardware, of course. No point reinventing
the wheel, I'll only add special cases here!
Electronics...
Discussion...
- We normally suggest Raytheon-Formerly
Auto helm electronics
and here is the link to their site. World wide service and predictability are the primary
reasons for the choice. They are compatible with most other equipment and we interface
them with your computer for computer navigation functions. Other choices are
available--Ultimately, we will discuss all of this with our systems
engineer.
- Satellite phones.(e101)
- Heart Interface--inverters.
- Furuno Radar. This
site also has great information on many other products and is growing. After you get
there, simply go to their home page, or strip off everything after com and go
there. Then check out their product section. Certainly if you're in their area (Holland
MI) USE THEIR SERVICES!
- The best computer charting program
(in my opinion). Navtrek. (We supply a data port at the Nav station in our package.)
This is the program we used for the Annapolis/Newport race. To find out more about
navigation in practice, using the Web's weather tools and more,
- ee120 http://www.1800batteries.com A link to
a site with all kinds of electronic gadgets (and batteries for them) from Palm Pilots to
hand held personal communication radios. (Home/Office/Boat)
