Getting there is half the fun...

For most vacationers, it's all about the destination. For true cruisers, it's all about smelling the roses along the way.

I remember back in the 60's when I took my family down the intercoastal to Florida on a 30' sailboat we were liviing on at the time. We would leave one marinea at 8:00 or so in the morning. By 11:00, a bunch of high speed power boats would roar by leaving us rolling in their wake with the shore line pounded and eroded by their wash.

We would be pointing out everything from turtles to alligators to the kids. Different kinds of plants (we had a book!) and in general took in the ever changing landscape. We imagined what it would be like to live in these pleasant looking homes along the waterway. What their life ashore must be like? Wondered how they made a living in these often far-flung communities?

By 3:30, 4:00 we would pull into the next stop--usually a marina, but often a pleasant side anchorage. Those power boats that roared by, were already at the marina. In fact had been sitting there for hours. They were loud, inebriated and raucous.

We docked as far away as we could and settled in with the kids to barbecue dinner and have a nice glass of wine while watching the sun set.

It was from this simple little adventure that the slogan, "Getting there is half the fun", was born!

testimonials

What one customer relayed to us recently sums up our "Team Approach".

What this customer said, about sums up how commissioning can be done right...

We are now halfway into our first week aboard Coexist and couldn't be happier.  Our experience with Bay Yacht from pre-sale thru commissioning and after sale support has been seamless, thanks to you and everyone we have dealt with from Bay Yacht from start to finish.  You made our purchase of the Jeanneau 44i one of the best purchasing experiences we have known.  We only hope that you will be around for our next purchase ... 20 years from now!

We would especially like to give a big hand to Mark Sims for his project management of the commissioning process. From the first time we met him, we felt a real comfort level in our decision to purchase our boat from Bay Yacht.  Mark and his group worked tirelessly to get  our boat fully commissioned in as timely a manner as possible, considering the rainy season we have experienced and his other commissioning obligations.   Mark has been totally upfront with us from Day 1 and has been a pleasure to work with. His knowledge and experience really helped us make informed decisions about equipment and add-ons that we were considering.   I have worked with many project managers in varied industries throughout my career and can honestly say that Mark is one of, if not the best, I have worked with.  At our turnover/walk-thru, Mark explained every piece of equipment and system and patiently answered all of our questions (and there were many).  We have been relying on the file box Mark put together with all of our systems instructions and warranty information as our "cheat sheet".  As we find punch list items and relay them to Mark, he or one of his crew are here before we can blink.

You should demand the best for your new boat. The best service, quality and price!

Equipment ideas...

New Verizon 2200 Hot spot.

Up to 5 computers get internet access for the price of one! We use it on our motorhome, but will now use it on our boat. One computer has the card, and it sets up a hot spot that up to 5 others within 100' can tap into. Also available with certain phone models like the Palm Pre from Verizon or Sprint.

Above and Beyond

Important options we offer our clients--based on requests.

Water filters. We are installing fresh water filters so you can get the cleanest, best tasting water right from a galley tap. It won't be necessary to lug on cases of bottled water anymore!

Safety and security. When you leave the boat to go exploring or to your favorite restaurant--do you worry about the stuff you left behind? With most boats, an intruder can simply walk aboard and have access to your personal stuff or valuable boat equipment that you are responsible for. Now, we are installing heavy duty combination locks and a keyed burglar alarm so the entire crew can have your custom combination when they individually come back--but intruders will move on to the next boat not so well protected.

Finally, a smelly subject. Do you object to the inevitable smells you find aboard? Whether it's the head, bilge or cooking odors--it doesn't matter. Our Ozone generator will clean the air before you board, and our on board generator will keep your boat fresh while you're cruising.

3.Comments on the new Isara 45 design

From a knowledgeable client...

“Well, my complements to the designers!  I'm looking at the 3/2 layout and we love the fact that there are only 2 heads to maintain/clean.  The galley looks sizeable with the ability to have upper cupboards on the port and forward sides (aft side of galley looks like it will have a lowered section where the helm floor takes over-no room for upper cubs there).
A privacy door to the owners cabin is a must have feature for us.  I don't like that the door opens into the cabin and blocks the entrance to the bedroom.  It would constantly be in the way.  Seems like it could either open the opposite way or be a slider that goes into the wall by the locker to the aft of the current door.

The helm design may just be the best yet.  A nice mixture of the small pop-up helms and the fly bridge helms.  I see how there are a few more steps to get to the passenger part of the helm where they can sit under the hard top and duck to walk under it. The helmsman can stand anywhere in his area.  Everyone is protected from the boom under the hard top (which provides a great place for more solar).  Plus the designers managed to get the boom low enough with this design that people can actually get to it without getting a ladder out.  Nice!  Great compromise.

I see the advantages in a sea way of having the dinghy up on the deck as shown.  But I'm curious as to how it gets there.  My goal is to have a simple system to raise the dinghy out of reach of night time pirates after finding our way home~hic~after a few rum drinks. “

Annapolis, Welcome to Fountaine Pajot Country!

(The largest display of Fountaine Pajots for sale and charter in America!)Quote

Latest news...

We know Fountaine Pajots. We have sold more Helia 44's than any other dealer world wide. We are the most expereienced dealer--world wide. Currently we have boats coming in all the time. We have the Helia 44 in stock and the first 3 cabin owner's boat in America at our dock in Annapolis. See them. Experience them (Available for sailing courses, charter and Try-before-you-buy!)

Here's what one client had to say in his recent blog...

"Our Hélia, Fat Iguana, is scheduled to leave port in La Rochelle, France on her trans-Atlantic journey early next week. It's about a 5-6 week sail to Annapolis for commissioning here.

Getting exciting.

Why did we decide on the Hélia?

We're catamaran people. We are in to comfort. We don't want our sailing to be like camping. Catamarans have more space, more amenities, they sail flat so you're not leaning way over just to stand up all the time. There's less rocking & rolling in anchorages at night. You can set things on the counter without them falling off all the time.

We looked at new and used. For us, the idea of buying new and putting the boat in charter for several years before we take it over full-time makes the most financial sense. After getting on a few catamarans, we decided that about a 44 foot boat was a good size for us for eventual full-time living.

Realistically, 44 foot new boats in that range come down to Fountaine Pajot, Lagoon, and Leopard. There are others, but most are either "custom" boats, home built boats, or very expensive. The three I mention above are the big "production" boats -- the Fords & Chevys.

We sailed on a Lagoon & FP. We never sailed the Leopard, but have been on one at the Annapolis boat show. We were actually supposed to do our first cruise on a Leopard 44, but it wasn't delivered in time. As it turns out, we weren't really impressed with layout of the boat. We didn't think much of the forward cockpit that is a major feature of that boat and makes the saloon quite a bit smaller.

We did sail on a Lagoon 440. While we liked the boat, it's a very heavy boat and we weren't impressed with the performance under sail. While we kind of liked the flybridge helm station while sailing -- it did make it impossible for the helmsman to interact with people on other areas of the boat (cockpit & saloon).

We then sailed the FP Orana 44 -- the version before the Hélia. Loved it. Loved the boat, loved the interior layout. MUCH better performance under sail than the Lagoon. We had heard great things about FP's new design, the Hélia. We got to see one in person at Annapolis and fell in love. It's a fantastic boat with performance said to be equal or better than the Orana.

We found the boat that we feel is perfect for us.

We thought a lot...we bought it!!

I know we're going to be thrilled with this boat...

Can't wait to get it!! Dave H., OK

BYA (Because you asked)

Q. What's the story on the new wood furniture used in Jeanneaus.

A. A number of people have commented on how much they liked the old way of doing “real” teak interiors.
Real teak, on virtually all boats, simply consisted of a veneer finish. That is, the teak log was rolled and a thin layer of veneer peeled off and glued to a marine plywood substrate to create “teak” panels, which were then made into furniture.

The problem with this is that the teak forests are not sustainable. As a result, the quality of teak available varied widely and there was much waste, and a marginal finish on the final panels manufactured. In addition, many governments,
including most European governments, started imposing strict restrictions on the importation of these unsustainable woods.
The path many companies took was to simply use some other sustainable wood veneer—cherry, birch, etc. This, again, resulted in inconsistent finishes. Learn about sustainable wood products...

Jeanneau -- The leading builder of innovative new models. Many now with 360 degree docking, and all sheets led to the helm, not just the cockpit.

Jeanneau 45DSHere's how one Gal made the transition from Motor home to a sailboat...

Eventually, she  chartered a catamaran in the Caribbean and that was better, but, this hands on Gal found that it lacked the "feel" of a "real" sailboat. Read the rest here.

Weather/Wind planning...

Average wind, Chesapeake Bay/Miami/Rhode Isl/Virgin Isl. NOTE: These are averages, on the Chesapeake (and most coastal areas) there is a sea breeze (Ches-normally from about 12-4PM) where the winds may be well into the teens, but the quiet periods of morning and late evening bring the averages down and account for some areas reputation for light air. Also note the small difference between summer and June or Sept. which are considered prime sailing times--Plan your sailing for afternoons, and motoring or quiet anchorages at other times. Find out the secret about taxes that most people don't understand...

Don't just keep getting the old shakedown!

There's one thing the Government continues to do right--offer incentives to small business that drive the economy, and job market.

Our  Boat as a business™ Program offers you an opportunity to set up your own business and take advantage of these government incentives. 70% of U.S. Businesses are small businesses. Why shouldn't you get the same advantages that 1,000's of others are already getting?

You say that home based business is one of the few legal tax shelters left. What does that mean?
Sandy Botkin: First of all, understand something: We have two tax systems in this country. [Many] times people think there's one for rich and one for poor. That is a huge myth. What the systems are is one for employees--people who don't know the rules, which are designed to take your wealth--and one for self-employed people, [the rules of] which are designed to create economic growth. The reason for that is, small business generates over 70 percent of the jobs in this country. So Congress passes good tax laws. And there are good tax laws--let me emphasize this--for small business .

Special offers

Now, Financing available with downpayments from 15-20% rates starting from sub 5% for 10-30 years

As an alternative, to conventional financing, consider our  Boat as a business™ program. You can combine extraordinary financing with tax advantages and income (You don't necessarily have to charter your boat to make income!) and reduce your out of pocket costs from 70 to 100% or, own your boat in 1/4 the time, for 1/4 the cost!

6. How to own for less-- Boat as a business™.

"Discover how to Legally, Ethically and morally reduce your taxes."

Attend our webinar and learn how to convert taxes you normally pay, into equity--and earn a profit--step by step.

This program may, or may not be for you--but who wouldn't want to know if they could own a new boat for the least possible cost? Convert tax savings into equity? Have total flexibility, but no out of pocket costs? You'll find out..

1. What boat you can qualify for.

2. how to integrate an exit strategy.

3. How to integrate your boat into your retirement planning.

4. How the tax advantages work

5. Details of cash flow.

6. Program comparison--Charter company or management company

7. Why you shouldn't buy into a charter company program.

8. What do you get out of it--resale, maintenance issues, exit strategy.

Bay Yacht Agency has an incredible success story with over 690 successful investors accomplishing their individual goals to date.

I'm constantly asked to explain the program in a few minutes over the phone. I just can't. I've tried. It's simple, but there are many details you need to understand. There are differences between programs and different programs work for different people--you need to find out what works for you--I'll explain.

There is no question you can be successful. There is no question that you can have total flexibility as to where you want to keep the boat and how much you can use it. You can have the boat exactly the way you want it, and set it up for business now, and personal use later.

To be fair, to yourself, you need a good understanding of this approach. You don't need the advise of a bunch of people who have limited or no experience. You need to spend 20 min to an hour with the founder of the original private owner, Boat as a business plan--Eric Smith. When you get done, you'll know if this program is for you or not--and, you might be surprised to find that this is right down your alley--even if you hate the idea of someone else using your boat, or if you're concerned about maintenance, or limited choices--we'll debunk the myths and share the challenges.

You can truly own a new boat for your long term personal use in 1/4 the time for 1/4 the cost. You can't afford not to know. Sign up for one of our upcoming webinars here.

NOTICE: The Bush tax cuts, regarding boats as a business, have been extended for one more year.

RE: Tax planning for 2013 Several important points:

The newly passed "American Taxpayer Relief Act" or ATRA is now in place for 2013. (Notice from our CPA)

"The act also extended many business tax credits and other provisions...The increased expensing amounts under Sec. 179 are extended through 2013. The availability of an additional 50% first-year bonus depreciation (Sec. 168(k)) was also extended for one year by the act. It now generally applies to property placed in service before Jan. 1, 2014 (Jan. 1, 2015, for certain property with longer production periods)."

Note also additional advantages.

1. The Top tax bracket is now higher, with some deductions eliminated making tax advantages even more important.
2. The Boat business tax advantages are "above the line" This means that it will lower the amount subject to AMT. With the AMT now, permanently having an inflation adjuster, beginning immediately, this is even more meaningful.
3. Alert: boat sales are through the roof right now and deliveries are getting later and later. Get in before you can't even get a boat this year--even now you may not get a boat until fall or late fall

Many other tax increases will be going into effect, including payroll tax, capital gains, etc. Bottom line is your taxes are going up, but the good news is that by setting your boat up as a business you can offset some of the effect, and convert taxes you would normally pay, into equity.

For your information, I am Eric Smith, the owner of BYA and started the program back in the 70's. Since then, I have helped over 694 people successfully set their boat up as a business where tax advantages and income reduced or eliminated their costs and they had their boat professionally maintained as a part of the package so they could use it care-free as often as they like.

We offer free webinars and seminars on the program, check the schedule here. Or call... 410-263-2311

Chief Justice Leaonard Hand said, “Over and over again courts have said that there is nothing sinister in so arranging one's affairs so as to make taxes as low as possible. Everybody does so, rich or poor, and do right, for nobody owes any public duty to pay more taxes than the law demands. Taxes are enforced exactions, not voluntary contributions.”

7. Everybody wins. Sellers and Buyers. Brokerage a new approach

Here's a unique new approach.

Sellers

The market is slow, right? Buyers are only buying at rock bottom prices? It's time consuming and expensive to sell a boat? Why won't dealers take trades--or if they do, at wholesale prices?

If you're looking to buy a new boat, we've developed a program to overcome the difficulties of the current market--and get you into a new boat for less!

Buyers-used boats--a secret list.

New Listings: We are bringing fresh, new brokerage boats to the market--boats you won't find on any standard listing site.

Certified boats: These boats are pre-surveyed, certified by us, and offered with a third party warranty.

Great deals: These boats will be be well below market price because we are subsidizing the sale price in order to make a new boat sale...

As a result of the boat show, we have developed a list of potential trade-ins...

Great deals: Here's a totally secret list... These boats will be be well below market price because we are subsidizing the sale price in order to make a new boat sale. These owners have agreed to have us pre-certify their boat and address any corrective issues in advance. They are motivated because they want to buy a new boat--and if they act now, they can get a new boat at a lower price now, than later. They are paying a greatly reduced commission and can pass on the savings. At the end of the day, they are offering an extremely attractive price. We're taking it a step further and throwing in a part of our commission on a new boat, in order to facilitate a quick sale.

Reserve your boat now, but pay for it in the spring!

Learn about the program, if you are considering a new boat and want to trade your boat, or you're looking for a great deal in a used boat with no costs until spring--click here for the list and to get complete details.

Also, see the special listings to the left... Reserve now, pay later!

Getting there is half the fun...

Life is short. Here's what Jimmy  Buffett said iin his book, "A pirate looks at fifty"
"Fun is about as good a habit as there is, especially when your search for it becomes tempered with the wisdom of time on the water. The destination is not that rewarding if you have not had the experience of the journey. My walkabout place cannot be yours. Your walkabout place cannot be somebody elses. You have to find your own."

The universal question we all ask as we see a capable offshore cruiser leaving the dock is, "Who are they, and where are they headed?" Become the adventurer, not the one left standing on the dock...

Saddest Thing...
