Why choose a Catamaran trawler?

You can have the speed. Up to about 25 knots.
You can have fuel economy. 1,000 mile range. 3.5-5 gal/hr at 8-12K.
Fuel economy? A big reason for choosing a Catamaran!
Striking benefits! At lower speeds, say 6 to 10 or so knots, the power cat will use anywhere from 10% to 20% less fuel while traveling at the same speed as her monohull counterpart. At speeds of 15 to 25 knots, the cat will offer as much as 40% to 70% better fuel economy than with a monohull. (Example: The Maryland 37 cat uses 8 GPH at 16 knots, while a same-size monohull uses about 13 GPH at that speed.) This can mean literally hundreds of dollars in savings per DAY! A Nordic Tug 52 uses 45 GHP at 18 knots. In an 8-hour run that amounts to hundreds of dollars of savings with a comparable Catamaran trawler.
You can have space. And privacy. Twin hulls offer 2-4 cabins with maximum privacy. Wide beam gives the space of an 8' longer boat in a more compact size. A 37' feels like a 45' Price per square foot is less expensive.
Comfortable underway and at anchor. No rolling. Straight tracking in a following sea.
Protected gear. A structural skeg protects the shaft and rudders. Go ahead. Run up on the beach. No problem.

Sea trials on a 37'

Actual sea trials were conducted in late July/August and Eric attended them in France.
"We were fortunate in that we had a cold, rainy, windy day July 28th when we went out. There was about a 3-4 foot chop running out in the bay off La Rochelle which is on the west coast of France. In addition, there were a number of conventional motor yachts scurrying to get in.
As we gradually increased our speed from the harbor into the waves, it was soon obvious that there would be almost no discernable difference in motion from the comfortable motion in the protection of the harbor. In fact, as I went to take pictures, I set my drink on the table while I was in the harbor and forgot about it. As the speed rolled up from 7 knots to 10, 12, 15 and finally topping out at 19+ heading into the seas all was calm in the serenity of the protected steering station in the cabin.
Later, as we turned around to head back, there was virtually no rolling as we turned side ways to the seas. Powerboat waves rolled under us with barely a notice. When one big wave came, I remembered my glass and as we swung over the wave, realized that I could have still left it there and it wouldn't have spilled!

The fundamental advantages are achieved by having two relatively narrow hulls instead of a single, much broader one. This configuration presents much less wave making resistance and thus the combination of more fuel economy, higher speeds per horsepower applied and less wave motion imparted to the boat.
Your benefits include a much smoother ride as the relatively finer bows cut through the waves and offer less volume for the waves to get a hold of (in a mono hull, you would call this excessive pitching). A side benefit is that the wider stance of a catamaran again with smaller volume hulls, helps to lessen and dampen the tendency of most mono hulls to roll in a cross swell. Like wise, when running in quartering seas, the boat doesn't tend to broach like a mono hull.
When maneuvering in tight spaces not only do you have the advantage of twin engines and rudders, but they are spaced further apart offering superior slow speed maneuvering capability.
As if all of this wasn't enough from a performance point of view, the wider catamaran offers an oversized main saloon, often the space of a 6-8' larger boat! In addition, there is increased deck/lounging space and offers exceptional walk around space. All of the deck space is enhanced because the dinghy is in davits not on deck, and the bridge is usable in just about all weather because of the exceptional stability. (Bridge area alone is approximately 10 X 11'!)

Bay Yacht Agency has been a leading new and used boat sales company based out of Annapolis, MD since 1972. In the last 6 years, we have become, possibly, the largest, offshore, sailboat catamaran dealer in North America. For the last 2 years we have experimented with larger engines installed in catamaran sailboats.
