Sailor Dan's Treasure
The message in a bottle...
It was a dark and stormy night...
Sailor Dan was coming to the Tobago Keys to meet his bride to be, Genevine. He was carrying many multi colored jewels as a wedding present for her.
As he was sailing by the Island of the 12 Palms, a ferocious storm came up. He fought the tiller and tried to take in the sails, but the wind and current were just too much. He lost control and felt the boat going over. At the last minute, he grabbed the bag of jewels and stuffed them down his shorts along with the few coins he had in his pockets. He leaped off the tumbling boat into the surf and struck out for the sandy beach in the distance.
While he focused on the one largest palm tree, he still found himself pummeled in the surf. Most of his clothes were ripped off his body as he tried to swim in the
maelstrom. As he finally touched solid ground with his feet, all he had left was his sandals and shorts with the bag of jewels tucked inside.
He was bleeding badly from the reef and knew he would soon die, but he wanted Genevine's jewels to be safe. So with his last strength, and a pencil he had in his bag, he made a treasure map as he paced off his last steps on the beach...
It was last year while walking on the beach that I found this map behind a tree. The clouds were roiling mad and I knew a big storm was about upon us, so I couldn't follow the map. I only had time to put up the sign I was bringing and then I had to rush back to my boat before the storm overtook us.
I never got back there but I heard stories about the Island and the treasure. No one was exactly sure what Island it was, because they weren't sure how many palm trees there really were. Were there eleven or twelve?
Of course I heard the story that when Sailor Dan washed up on shore, he hit his head so hard on one of the Palms that it stunted it's growth. So is there really eleven palms? And a dwarf?
I guess we'll never know, because this all happened a long time ago. you'll just have to look at the drawing and the map and try to figure out which Island it was...
As I sit here now, with the winds howling outside I wonder if anyone will ever find the treasure?
Well, I'm old and shakey now so I'll probably never go back. But I'm passing this map on to your parents. Hop'n you will pick up where I left off and find Genevine's treasure.
It's said that Sail'n Dan planted his sandal over the first treasure and hid the rest in the sand up in a crack in the rock about one giant step away from a cactus in another crevice.
I wish you fair winds in your search for the illusive treasure of Cap'n Dan.
Yellow Man, Sr.
P.S. If you see my son, please don't miss his lobster dinner on the beach--somewhere near the treasure...
When I was there, I made a quick sketch of the Island. Maybe this will help.

Setting this up...
The treasure: Colored candies--Sour Balls work great. Add some local EC coins. (Don't forget some zip lock bags. An old wood box helps but is not necessary for the fun.)
An old shoe. Be sure to bring an old flip flop or shoe of some kind.
Burying the treasure in keeping with the map: Dinghy in early in the morning (kind of like Christmas). The first, easy to find is buried to the left of the left most palm. Plant the shoe on top. For the second, walk up the rock (shown on the map) and place the package in the crevice.
Don't give this map and story too the kids to early. They'll overwhelm you with excitement and the need to go find the treasure now. Hope this adds an extra element of fun to your enjoyment with your children... It certainly did with ours!
